Biking directions on Google Maps
Bikers rejoice – in some wonderful news, Google has just added biking directions to its Google Maps service.
This is a shot in the arm to the scores of environmental commuters who have switched to bicycles to reduce their carbon footprint.
Currently bike trails data for the US has been added to this application. While search of biking directions, the maps will try to plot the best rider friendly route for you, while avoiding hills, using bike lanes and avoiding busy intersections. This is nothing short of a boon for bikers. Maps also includes various color coding conventions to show biker-only routes and also helps you customize your path based on you biking preferences.
Read Google’s blog entry for more details. I hope such a service comes to India soon. It would coincide perfectly with my intentions of switching to biking for my daily commute.
