Google Picasa brings automatic face detection and face tagging
Today while I was putting up some photos on Google Picasa, I found an awesome cool new feature. This is called face tagging. The incredible thing about this is that, the algorithm recognizes faces in the photos that one uploads and marks them for tagging automatically. Now it is also intelligent to recognize these faces and distinguish them from one another.
So, while I got the message when I first logged in, that there are 1193 odd faces in my pictures, I was easily overwhelmed. Then I wanted to see what this is about and I clicked on one face. Immediately I got a pane of about 8-9 faces of the very same person from different photographs. The algorithm has managed to figure out similarities in the faces and give me a huge selection of faces to tag at once. If the faces are indeed of the same person, then one can tag them all together. If not, then you can simply uncheck te wrong selections and continue with the rest of the tagging.

Face Tagging on Picasa
The beauty of this is that it is able to identify faces even with different exposure levels and mild different in angles and differen shirts. So this looks pretty interesting in itself. Of course the downer is that the tagging doesn’t seem to even end as I have so many people in my photos, that I have already tagged around 400 faces and I still have about 900 keft,
Do try it out, its is quite interesting and works surprisingly well.
